About the

American Academy
of Oral Surgery (AA-OS)

The AA-OS should not be confused with any society, academy, association, organization, or other entity of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.

Goals and Mission of the AA-OS

Dentistry has changed significantly over the past 15 years. Because of new technologies and techniques, general dental practitioners and non-surgical specialists are now doing more treatment that was typically the domain of specialists, including oral surgery procedures.

Many of these dentists do these advanced procedures with minimal additional training and experience, which leads to frustration, complications and adversely affects patient care.

More commonly, specialists are called upon to treat these complications, many of which could have been easily avoided or treated by a properly trained clinician.

The Mission of the AA-OS is to provide a pathway for interested practicing dentists and their team members to obtain the education and training necessary to successfully perform and complete procedures beyond what was taught to them in Dental School with the competence and confidence to provide the best care to their patients.

This requires teaching by well-qualified and experienced instructors, in which simple surgical procedures are mastered before more advanced ones are attempted, knowing the appropriate anatomy, biology, and preferred techniques, being able to avoid and manage complications with rare assistance, staying within the boundaries of their education and training, and knowing which cases should be treated by a specialist, or in cooperation with a specialist.
